This is a great little aquarium heater at a good price ($14 + shipping) — and one of the very few that I was able to find at this size/wattage with a cover. The heater seems to work well. The cover fits the heater perfectly and, in a vertical position, it is very simple to remove or reinsert the heater into and out of the cover. Note that only gravity keeps the heater in the cover. I cannot imagine how that would cause a problem, but JFYI. I have used this heater vertically and at a 45 degree angle without issue. I believe that this heater can be used vertically and horizontally.

Why 4 Stars?

1. On my unit, the control knob is very stiff. On the plus side, this makes it impossible to change the setting by accident. On the negative side, it is so stiff that it can be a bit of a hassle to adjust.

2. This heater, unlike very similar heaters by the same manufacturer, and contrary to documentation, does not have any type of guide for temperature or temperature level. The only way that I found to set it is to set it up, pick a random setting (i.e., twist the knob so it is some random point a little way below max), check the water temperature with a separate thermometer, and then gradually twist up or down from there. If you only use it intermittently, you have to repeat the process — albeit you can start from your last setting, which may not yield the exact same temperature the next time, but is likely a closer starting point. Given that most such heaters are not very accurate (at least in my experience) in matching an exact temperature to read out, this design is not too much of an inconvenience — but, it is a bit of a hassle and will likely delay your use until you can get it well adjusted.

3. At time of purchase, no Prime Shipping.

Other than the above three points, it’s a good heater and a good value at ~$14.

I bought two of these within a weeks time. The first one arrived shattered, despite being inside the guard, protected in its box, and packaged in another box.

I returned that one and bought a second. When I put set it for 75, put it in the tank, and plugged it in the indicator light didnât turn on. I tried a few things. Finally I cranked it a all way up to its highest setting. Still nothing. I smacked the top, and the indicator light turned on, finally. However, it only stays on if I set it on max. It turns off below that.

Iâm buying a different light.

Keep your tropical fish happy and comfortable… this heater is well built and the mounting shroud ads a layer of incidental bump protection and holds much better than heaters with just c clipped suction cups….
