i agree damsels and madarins are not for beginners and Most damsels are
downright mean. I think the 6 lines are hit or miss tho. I’ve seen some
awesome tanks that have had 6lines for years, and my personal experience
over 1 year with my 6line in the 37 gal he’s never once been a bully and he
eats whatever I feed him

Six line wrasses are easy to keep and in any sizable aquarium you will not
have a bit of trouble. Same thing with damsels. Most damsels are super
aggressive, but there are non aggressive damsels that are dirt cheap and
perfect for beginners. This video should be taken down.

Great video! Tangs have been hardest for me to keep so far. They get sick
so easily. Which, I think I may have accidentally bought mine sick. I got
garlic to soak their food in, but still never had much luck keeping them.
Any other suggestions?

i sold a mandarin dragonet to a guy with a 30 gallon because it was
ABSOLUTELY DESTROYING frozen mysis straight from the wholesaler. I’ve never
seen a mandarin take frozen like that straight away.

i should have gotten the thing for myself. i wish i had, cuz the guy bought
a cowfish (from my sleazy boss) and the thing died and bombed the entire
tank.

i was seriously disappointment by this. i don’t think i will steer another
amazing mandarin his way (although my boss was the one who sold him a very
inappropriate fish for his tank), but who the hell knows when i will see
another like that one.

I bought a mandarin and put him in a 46 gallon tank with no sump just
mechanical filter that was only up and running for 3 months…2 yrs later I
still have him..i upgraded into a 90 g and just recently I noticed that
he’s been eating flakes..devours it but doesn’t touch frozen food :/

I think you should have picked Tangs instead of Damsels or both, because
most beginners start on the smaller side and some put a tang in their nano
tank.

Not all Damsels are nasty, and remember clowns are damsels also!

mandarins yes; 6 line no,is one of the best fish you can get if you add it
to your system last mine have never been agressive; damsels debatable; if
you do it properly.

Mandarins are beautiful. I know someone who works at a LFS and been
doing marines for only about a year or 2 and has a mandarin, sea hares and
pipefish. Damsels are evil, they take over tanks and are fast so you can’t
remove them easily. Heard chromis are fine though.

Nice advise. Im currently setting up a 75 gallon system and I do however
have a mandarin and sixline on my list. I do plan on waiting until the tank
is nearly fully stocked before adding them.

Great Video. I’ve had a sixline since I established my tank a year ago, and
he’s become very territorial over time. I had a firefish and a yellow clown
goby that he got along with since he (the sixline) was added last. However,
when the firefish jumped through the egg crate top (since replaced by
glass) and the yellow clown goby died of an illness, the sixline killed
their replacements. I still have him and I love his boldness and the way he
traverses the tank, and although I’ve added a few large-ish fish that he
gets along with, I wouldn’t dare add another small or timid fish to my
display, which really limits my options.

I feel bad for nearly any mandarin purchased, along with dragonets and the
poorly named scooter blenny, since most will slowly starve. There’s also a
growing movement of people who think that training a mandarin to eat foods
such as pellets or frozen mysis will make up for their lack of pods, but a
mandarin doesn’t have a digestive system that allows them to store food
(hence their need to constantly hunt), so even those that do eat other
foods will starve without a constant supply of pods. Some have had success
by feeding baby brine shrimp a few times daily, but how many of us are
really willing to do so?

It might also be worthwhile to add a text box during the mandarin section
that says that the same applies for very cool looking fish like the ruby
red dragonet. Again, great video.

I disagree.

Yes, Mandarins are a terrible idea for most any tank.

I do not know where this 6 Line is Aggressive Theory came from. I have
owned many 6 Lines over the years in various tanks of mine. Every single
one them has been a perfectly well behaved and peaceful fish.

Yes, Damsels can be aggressive but do not say they are all bad because the
Blue Ones are fine. They just tend to pick on each other. I have had a
ton of these and they have never bothered my other fish. By the way there
is a Damsel called a Starki Damsel wich is actually super super peaceful
you just do not see them often because they are around 60.00 and it is
tough to sell a 60.00 fish that is a Damsel because of people like you
giving them a bad rep which is very sad. Yes, a lot of them are bad like
Domino Damsel but do not generalize and say they are all bad.

Please do research before giving people misinformation.

I know you are young and new to the hobby so please do not take it the
wrong way.

I am just trying to help.

I do admire your passion for the Hobby though I can see it means a lot to
you and I can tell you will go far in it.

Mandarins ARE for beginners!!! You only have to do one thing before you put
one in your tank…………..Put in amphipods and copepods. They are an
idiot proof fish as long as they have these bugs to eat, and the bugs will
reproduce far faster than they can be eaten.
